Jonathan Middlemiss
Jonathan Middlemiss (1949 – 2021) was an internationally renowned artist recognised for his exceptional skills in creating intricate ceramic sculptures which integrate themes of geometry, ecology, spirituality and landscape. He described his ceramic forms and paintings as openings to different experiences of nature, using sensory immersion in the landscape as the foundation of his work.
Jon’s personal philosophy explored maps of consciousness that offer portals to the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual states that arise from engagement with nature. This metaphysical relationship used different visual languages to express sensory experiences in different mediums, most notably clay. He often used natural materials such as stone, wood, and metal in his work, applying pastel and charcoal in his dynamic and evocative paintings.
The day before his passing, he made the gift of all images and rights of his life’s work to his daughter, insisting she use them and say, “My Dad did that”. Jon always said the artwork he created was his children’s legacy, and Serena is committed to preserving this legacy for his family, upholding the integrity of his life’s philosophy that inspired new perspectives in art and personal transformation. With a background in design and a deep understanding of her father's practice; Serena is uniquely suited to organising exhibitions, establishing authenticity, and promoting her father's artwork. She is currently cataloguing and documenting Jon’s extensive portfolio and writing his biography to ensure that his complete story is preserved and accessible for the future of art history .
Jon’s son Julian lives in Australia, he is an ardent explorer and dedicated to his family. He carries his father's essence in everything he does, which undoubtably passes on to Jon's granddaughter Mia; born on the same day as her Grandpa. Together they are working in collaboration to promote and preserve his work for current collectors and future generations. The combined knowledge of their father's work and life, with their shared outlook, love, and admiration of such an extraordinary man allows his legacy to continue in a meaningful way. They understand the themes, philosophies, and techniques that Jon used, and have a keen eye for identifying his artwork within the context it was created; aligning him alongside the greatest ceramicists of the twentieth century.
Jon Middlemiss was a talented artist who left behind a remarkable legacy and impressive collection of art that continues to inspire and captivate art enthusiasts worldwide. Middlemiss Art would very much like to hear from individual collectors, galleries, and other people who had an interest in his life and work.
